It has been five days since Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were inaugurated to their positions as President and Vice President of our country, The United States of America. Just writing that brings me relief, but I also fear my relief could be short-lived. For four years, I’ve been conditioned to a life of worry, stress, frustration, anger, aggravation, and helplessness under the irrational, unstable rule of a madman who tweeted and rallied his way through his presidency spreading lies and creating an alternative reality that almost half of the country accepted.
On the evening of the nineteenth, I felt calm flow over me during the moment of silence as our new leaders looked toward the Washington Monument over the reflection pool that was lined by four hundred lights in remembrance of those who lost their lives to COVID. Amanda Gorman’s words in conjunction with that image, the lights reaching toward the sky, will remain with me giving me hope for the future. We will be brave enough to see the light with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris leading us, and we will be brave enough to be it.
Thank you Amanda Gorman for your inspirational words.
